It’s a well known bit of celebrity fact that Australian actresses Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman are good friends and have been for over twenty years. Though Kidman’s star has been shining the longest, Watts has managed to make a name for herself in the last decade in independent as well as commercial films.
They may not have starred in a movie together since 1991’s “Flirting”, and have yet to find another common project they can agree on, but the actresses seem to channel the same type of roles as they will be starring this year as two of the most famous and beloved princesses of the last century. Kidman will portray Princess Grace of Monaco in the film “Grace of Monaco” (December 27, 2013) and Watts will portray Diana, Princess of Wales in “Diana” (late 2013).
In “Grace of Monaco”, Kidman plays American movie star turned princess Grace Kelly in this biobic which will focus on Kelly’s identity and marriage crisis in the early 60s during the time of a dispute between her husband Prince Rainier III (Tim Roth) and Charles de Gaulle. I must admit that I am mostly looking forward to seeing Roth in the role of Rainier, a delightfully unusual choice, unlike Kidman, for this type of role… so I included a photo 😉
As for “Diana”, Watts will portray the People’s Princess during the last two years of her life, before her untimely death at the age of 36, as she campaigns against land mines and dates Dr. Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews) and Dodi al Fayed (Cas Anvar).
Not only do these projects sound interesting for their biographical aspects, but also because the lead actresses are likely to find themselves in the Best Actress Oscar race come 2014. Sounds like a (friendly) battle of BFFs! 😉
